Mini Private Workshops in Encaustic

Mini Workshops ( 4-6 hours)

These workshops can be scheduled privately and they require a minimum of 4 hours. The fees cover the use of supplies such as waxes, hot plates, temperature gauges and fusing tools.


1 person : 4 hours -  $300. Thereafter, hours 5 and 6 will be at $60 per hour


2 people:  4 hours -  $500. Thereafter, hours 5 and 6 will be at $95 per hour


For private workshops: Full payment will be required upon scheduling. Workshops can be reserved at mutually convenient times on a first come basis. Payment terms are available.

Contemporary Encaustic Techniques  Sat., March 6, 10 am-3 pm
Learn solvent-free approaches to working and painting safely with encaustic. This medium is compatible with drawing, oil painting and sculpture. Learning will be hands-on with demos covering traditional and contemporary methods. No prior experience necessary. Takes place at Michelle’s studio in the Crane Arts Building in Philadelphia.

Image Transferring & Monoprinting to Wax Sun., March 7, 10 am-3 pm


This course will concentrate on transferring and layering personal imagery onto and into the wax. Imitation gold leaf, carbon paper and graphite transferring will be some of the techniques covered. A copy machine will be available to assist with projects. Open to intermediate and advanced students who have taken a previous encaustic workshop. Takes place at Michelle’s studio in the Crane Arts Building in Philadelphia.

Encaustic Workshops in Philadelphia

Workshop Descriptions

Contemporary Techniques in Encaustic. Participating artists will learn solvent-free approaches to working
and painting safely with hot pigmented wax, otherwise known as encaustic. It is compatible with drawing, oil painting and sculpture and these mediums will be addressed in combination with wax. Learning will be primarily hands-on with ample demonstrations covering traditional and contemporary methods. No prior experience in encaustic is necessary.

Encaustic Image Transfer & Monoprinting on Wax. This class requires that you have completed one other workshop or have been working w/the medium fairly consistently. The focus is on printing/monoprinting and layering imagery onto/into the wax. A copy machine will be available to assist with your projects. Encaustic waxes and equipment are included..

Image Layering, Gold Leaf & Drawing in Wax emphasizes the translucent and opaque nature of wax and its ability to show depth. Techniques covered will include image transfer, combining oil and wax, glazing, scraping and scribing. This class is also excellent for those who love drawing. In addition it will include a section on gold leaf. The basic core of encaustic technique and safety information will be covered, but certain techniques will be emphasized and demonstrated in more detail. No prior experience with encaustic is necessary.

Collage, Assemblage, 3D & Experimental. This class requires a 2 – 3 day span of time. It focuses on the adhesive and structural nature of wax. Encaustic can be used to integrate different materials, both two and three dimensional. Because of its structural properties, the wax itself can be carved, textured, built up in relief and modeled. The beginning of the class will cover the basic core of encaustic information during which time those with prior encaustic experience can choose to work independently.

Independent Studio. For those who already have experience with encaustic and wish to work independently. The fee for this is $40/hr with most materials included. A minimum of 2 hours is required. Two people: $30/hr each.

Medium Making and Hands On Studio time.
For those who already have experience with encaustic and wish to work independently. Technical instruction will be on an as needed basis. There will be a demonstration on the making of encaustic medium which will be available for purchase at the end of the day. Fee: $200/person from 11am – 4 pm.

Workshops run from 10am – 3pm. This will include a 1 hour lunch break. Coffee & tea +snack foods such as fruit, cheese and crackers are provided. You are welcome to bring a more substantial lunch. There are also many local cafés and restaurants around the Crane Building.

Class size: 6 – 7 people

One Day Workshops: $225

Two Day Workshops: $400

Classes begin with Encaustic Basics which includes information on how to safely work with this medium. Those with prior working knowledge of encaustic may choose to use this time to work independently. After the ground work has been completed, the class continues on its chosen technical focus.

Supplies and equipment are included.

Prior to class, a materials list is available with both necessary and optional items to bring. I am also reachable via email/phone to registrants should there be any questions with regard to the workshops.

A one week R&F purchase discount will be available upon completion of any workshop.

Supply List for participants

Unless otherwise stated, the class fee covers:

- all paints, waxes, oil sticks, fusing tools, temperature regulators, gold leaf, tacking iron, hot plates, encaustic palettes, glues and an assortment of papers. These are for use in class only.Supplies not covered by the class fee:- bristle and/or sable artist brushes (no synthetic hair)- panels/supports: these should be rigid and absorbent. (eg. unglazed clay, wooden board/panel, untempered masonite). Recommended: several small 5” x 7” or 8” x 10” panels for experimentation.Suitable panels: untempered masonite, paint free wooden board/planks, plywood such as luan, unglazed ceramic/brick, unpainted paper mounted to a board, anything that is porous and permeable.Unsuitable panels: plastic, plexiglass, an oil/acrylic painted surface, glass, metal, a varnished surface.
Optional:- mark making tools (eg. sculpture, ceramic, dental, culinary, nails)- assemblage/collage materials (eg. handmade/printmaking papers, unprimed canvas)In addition, R & F Handmade Paints has offered a purchase discount on encaustic supplies to all participants for a period of one week after the completion of a workshop. R&F Handmade Paints is the leading encaustic manufacturer in the country. They use no solvents in their waxes. Their colors are safe to use with the correct temperatures and have a high pigment concentration.

Directions to the Crane Arts Building

The Crane Arts is located on North American St. between Jefferson and Master. Basically a short walk North of Girard and a couple blocks West of 2nd Street. We are 10 minutes from Old City and just a quick walk from Northern Liberties.

From Girard Avenue, turn North onto 3rd Street. Turn right at the first stop sign. Turn Left at American Street. Crane Arts will be the large wedge-shaped building located one block North at the corner of Master and American Streets.If you will be visiting Crane Arts by car, please mind the driveway of Rabinowitz Glass Co. located across the street from us. Cars blocking access to their driveway risk being towed.

From 95: Take the Girard Ave exit (exit 23). Proceed West on Girard and turn right on 3rd Street. Turn right at the first stop sign. Turn Left at American Street. Crane Arts will be the large wedge-shaped building located one block North at the corner of Master and American Streets.


By Subway:Take the Market-Frankford line to the Girard Avenue exit. Walk 6 blocks West on Girard Ave. Turn Right on 2nd Street and walk 2 blocks North. Turn left on Master and walk 2 blocks West to American Street. The Crane Arts building will be ahead and to your right (there is signage at the very top of the building).
